The Vallarta Cup Race Series – A Brief History

The Vallarta Cup Race Series is an annual event that takes place in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. It is a series of races that consists of three races: the El Galeon race, the Puerto Vallarta to Banderas Bay race, and the Banderas Bay Regatta. The event takes place every year in February and attracts participants from all over the world.

The Vallarta Cup Race Series was first held in February of 1992 with just six boats competing in the El Galeon race. Since then, the event has grown to attract over one hundred boats and more than two thousand participants from all over the world. The Puerto Vallarta to Banderas Bay race is now one of the most popular races in Mexico and the Banderas Bay Regatta is one of the most popular regattas in the world.

The Races

The El Galeon race is a long-distance race that starts in Puerto Vallarta and ends in Banderas Bay. It is named after the Spanish galleon that sank in Banderas Bay in 1683. The Puerto Vallarta to Banderas Bay race is a shorter distance race that starts and ends in Puerto Vallarta.  The Banderas Bay Regatta is a series of short-distance races that take place within Banderas Bay.

The courses for all three races are designed to challenge even the most experienced sailors. El Galeon race course takes sailors through some of the most beautiful and treacherous waters in Mexico. The Puerto Vallarta to Banderas Bay race course takes sailors around Isla Grande, a large island off the coast of Puerto Vallarta, and through Los Corales, a dangerous channel with strong currents and reefs. The Banderas Bay Regatta course takes sailors through all different types of conditions, from calm waters to rough seas.
