This was an initiative led by Mexico‘s Secretariat of Tourism, with the support from other federal agencies, to promote a series of towns around the country that offer visitors a “magical” experience – by reason of their natural beauty, cultural richness, traditions, folklore, historical relevance, cuisine, art crafts, and great hospitality.

In Riviera Nayarit, there are a few special “Pueblos Mágicos” that are worth taking your time to visit. Sayulita, Nayarit: Sayulita is the type of town where beach, sand, beauty, and fun come together to create a truly spectacular experience. This small surfer’s paradise is full of friendly people, colorful places, vestiges of the Huichol culture, plenty of yoga studios and surf schools. It’s only 30 minutes away from Punta de Mita and an hour or so from Puerto Vallarta.

Jala, Nayarit: Jala is a hidden gem tucked away in the Riviera Nayarit. If you like trying new food, this is the perfect place to find traditional corn-based foods and a local favorite: pozole! The cobbled stones, the history and tradition of the local culture, and the festivals make this a fun experience for anyone looking to get off the beaten path. It is also near a very impressive volcano known as Ceboruco which is a very unique adventure to enjoy in the area. While it is a bit further away from Puerto Vallarta than Sayulita, it’s more than worth the trek.
